The New York Knicks delivered one of the wildest playoff comebacks in franchise history Tuesday night, erasing a 22-point deficit before defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers 115-104 in an overtime instant classic at Madison Square Garden.
For nearly two quarters, it looked like Cleveland was about to steal Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals on the road. The Cavaliers were flying offensively early, attacking the Knicks in transition and raining down perimeter shots while silencing the Garden crowd.
Cleveland led by as many as 22 points midway through the second quarter behind dominant performances from Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland. Mitchell was electric from the opening tip, creating offense at every level while Garland pushed the tempo and continuously broke down New York’s defense.
But the Knicks slowly began turning the game into a street fight.
The momentum changed late in the second quarter when Jalen Brunson caught fire offensively. Brunson attacked mismatches, got into the paint, and repeatedly knocked down clutch mid-range shots to keep New York alive. Every basket seemed to bring the Garden crowd back to life.
Then came the third quarter avalanche.
New York’s defense completely tightened up as Josh Hart and OG Anunoby began forcing turnovers and disrupting Cleveland’s rhythm on the perimeter. Hart’s energy became contagious as he battled for rebounds, dove for loose balls, and created second-chance opportunities that shifted the entire feel of the game.
Meanwhile, Karl-Anthony Towns punished Cleveland inside. Towns stretched the floor offensively while dominating key possessions in the paint, helping the Knicks slowly chip away at the lead possession by possession.
By the fourth quarter, Madison Square Garden was deafening.
Every defensive stop was met with playoff-level chaos from the crowd as Brunson continued taking over offensively. The Knicks eventually erased the deficit entirely in the final minutes after a massive three-pointer from Anunoby tied the game and sent the building into a frenzy.
The closing moments of regulation became a heavyweight fight.
Mitchell answered with a difficult jumper to briefly put Cleveland back in front before Brunson attacked the lane for a clutch basket that tied the game again in the final seconds. Cleveland had one last chance to win it at the buzzer, but the shot rimmed out, sending the Garden into absolute madness as the game headed to overtime.
Once overtime began, the Knicks completely seized control.
New York outscored Cleveland 15-4 in the extra session as the Cavaliers looked exhausted and rattled after blowing the massive lead. Brunson controlled the tempo, Towns dominated the glass, and Hart delivered several momentum-shifting hustle plays that buried Cleveland for good.
Brunson finished with a superstar performance, carrying the Knicks offensively throughout the comeback and once again proving why he has become one of the most clutch players in the NBA postseason.
Towns delivered a massive double-double performance, while Hart filled the stat sheet with rebounds, assists, and relentless defensive effort. Anunoby’s two-way play proved critical throughout the second half and overtime.
For Cleveland, Mitchell was sensational for stretches and did everything possible to keep the Cavaliers afloat offensively. Garland provided scoring and playmaking early, but the Cavs offense completely stalled late as New York’s physical defense took over the game.
The win gives the Knicks a 1-0 series lead, but more importantly, it sends a message to the rest of the NBA.
This team believes it can win any game from any situation.
And after overcoming a 22-point deficit in the Eastern Conference Finals on one of basketball’s biggest stages, it’s hard to argue otherwise.
