Securing the Foundation

The Chicago Bears have officially locked down a cornerstone of their franchise, signing right tackle Darnell Wright to a massive four-year, $116 million extension. The deal, which includes $93 million in guaranteed money, represents the most guaranteed funds ever awarded to an offensive lineman in NFL history. General Manager Ryan Poles, who selected Wright 10th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, emphasized that the 25-year-old tackle has consistently elevated the play of his teammates since arriving in Chicago, making him a vital component of the team's long-term vision.
An All-Pro Performance
Wright’s extension follows a dominant 2025 campaign where he earned AP Second-Team All-Pro honors. Starting all 18 games, including the postseason, Wright anchored a line that propelled the Bears to an NFC North Division title and a trip to the NFC Divisional Round. His presence was vital for a unit that led the league in fewest giveaways with only 11 and finished the regular season with the NFL’s third-ranked rushing offense. Wright’s durability is equally impressive, as he has started all 49 career regular-season appearances since entering the league.
Protecting the Franchise
The primary beneficiary of this long-term security is quarterback Caleb Williams. In 2025, Wright’s protection allowed Williams to set the Bears' franchise single-season passing yard record while the team surrendered just 24 sacks, the third-fewest in the league. Head coach Ben Johnson noted that Wright epitomizes the team's culture of hard work and belief, describing him as a powerful player capable of displacing defenders at the line of scrimmage. By securing Wright through 2031, the Bears have ensured their franchise quarterback remains protected by one of the league's premier blockers.
Looking Ahead
With Wright’s future secured, the Bears are positioned for what Ryan Poles believes can be a deep playoff run this season. The extension not only resets the market for right tackles but also signals Chicago's commitment to building through the trenches. As the team prepares for the upcoming schedule, the stability on the right side of the line provides a foundation for sustained success. For Wright, who expressed his happiness to remain in the city where he has made his roots, the focus now shifts entirely to achieving championship-level execution.
