The Loss of Nephi Sewell

Chicago Bears
Chicago Bears — Soldier Field

The Chicago Bears' defensive unit faced a significant setback this week as the team officially placed linebacker Nephi Sewell on the Reserve/Injured list. Sewell, who was competing for a rotational role, suffered a season-ending right leg injury during the second quarter of the preseason matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. The injury occurred while Sewell was making a tackle on Bengals running back Tahj Brooks, and he was subsequently carted off the field at Paycor Stadium. This unfortunate turn follows a concussion Sewell sustained just a week prior during the preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.

Enter Antonio Grier

To address the sudden vacancy in the linebacker room, the Bears signed Antonio Grier Jr. on August 25, 2026. Grier arrives in Chicago fresh off a championship season in the UFL with the Louisville Kings. During his seven regular-season appearances in the UFL, Grier recorded 15 tackles, three pass breakups, and a notable 47-yard interception return for a touchdown. While Grier has limited NFL defensive experience—having played only two defensive snaps for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024—he brings significant special teams value, having logged 105 special teams snaps during his time in Tampa.

The Final Roster Push

Grier’s arrival coincides with the activation of rookie linebacker Keyshaun Elliott from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Elliott, a fifth-round selection from Arizona State in the 2026 NFL Draft, now joins a crowded competition as the Bears prepare for their preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans on August 29. With veterans like T.J. Edwards and Jack Sanborn anchoring the unit, the battle for the final depth spots has intensified. Grier and Elliott will have one final opportunity to prove their worth before the mandatory 53-man roster cuts.

Looking Ahead

The linebacker shuffle highlights the volatile nature of the NFL preseason. While the loss of Sewell is a blow to the team's depth and special teams units, the addition of a proven UFL playmaker like Grier provides a fresh look for the defense. As the Bears head into the final days of camp, the coaching staff must decide if Grier’s recent production or Elliott’s rookie potential is the better fit for a defense looking to make a leap in the 2026 season.
