A Welcome Return

The Chicago Bears received a significant boost this week as defensive end Montez Sweat officially returned to the practice field at Halas Hall. Sweat, who missed the previous two games due to a suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy, described the experience as "devastating" but is now focused on moving forward. His return comes at a pivotal time as the team prepares for a high-stakes Monday night matchup against the Seattle Seahawks.
Assessing the Production
Sweat’s presence has been a cornerstone of the Bears' defense since his arrival in 2023. While he led the team with 10 sacks during the 2025 season, his start to the 2026 campaign has been more measured. In the five games he appeared in prior to his suspension, Sweat recorded two sacks, four quarterback hits, and seven tackles. With a pressure rate of 8.8% on his pass-rush snaps, the coaching staff is looking for him to regain the elite form that made him a focal point of the defensive unit.
Defensive Outlook
The Bears managed to navigate the two-game stretch without their star edge rusher, securing victories against the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots. Despite this success, the team remains committed to improving a pass rush that has been a point of emphasis throughout the offseason. With Sweat back in the rotation alongside teammates like Austin Booker and Dayo Odeyingbo, the defense aims to tighten its pressure packages and force opposing quarterbacks into more difficult decisions.
Looking Ahead
As the Bears look to build on their 5-2 start under head coach Ben Johnson, the return of a veteran leader like Sweat provides both tactical and emotional stability. The team is currently positioned as a playoff contender in the NFC, and the ability of the defensive line to consistently disrupt the pocket will be critical in the second half of the season. For Sweat, the focus is now entirely on the field, aiming to put the recent distraction behind him and contribute to a deep postseason run.
