Defensive Front in Flux

Chicago Bears — Soldier Field

The Chicago Bears are navigating a significant personnel shift on their defensive line following the announcement that defensive end Montez Sweat has been suspended for two games for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing substances policy. Sweat, who has recorded seven tackles and two sacks through the first five games of the 2026 season, will be sidelined for the upcoming matchups against the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots. He is eligible to return to the active roster on October 23.

Managing Personnel Shortages

The timing of the suspension compounds existing depth issues for the Bears. Defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo, who has been a productive force for the unit, exited the team's Week 5 loss to the Green Bay Packers with a quad injury. With the defensive front already thin, the coaching staff is looking for immediate contributions from the rest of the roster to maintain pass-rush efficiency.

Shemar Turner Returns

In a move to bolster the rotation, the Bears activated defensive lineman Shemar Turner from the reserve/PUP list on Tuesday. Turner, a 2025 second-round pick, has been working his way back from a season-ending ACL tear suffered in October 2025. While defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has noted that it would be unrealistic to expect players returning from the PUP list to immediately handle a full-time workload, Turner is expected to provide necessary depth on the interior of the defensive line starting in Week 6.

Looking Ahead

As the team prepares for Atlanta, the focus shifts to how the remaining pass rushers, including Austin Booker—who currently leads the team with four sacks—will step up in the absence of Sweat. The coaching staff faces the difficult task of integrating Turner into the rotation while managing the health of the remaining defensive linemen to avoid further depletion of the unit.
