Key Storylines

The Chicago Bears have officially set their 53-man roster for the 2026 season, but the path to the opener against the Carolina Panthers has been anything but smooth. General manager Ryan Poles and head coach Ben Johnson navigated a complex series of moves this week, placing safety Coby Bryant and tight end Hayden Large on injured reserve to facilitate the return of two familiar faces. Bryant, a key piece of the secondary, is expected to miss four to six months following knee surgery, a significant blow to a unit already under pressure to perform in Johnson’s high-stakes defensive scheme.
Player Spotlight
The headline of the roster shuffle is the return of linebacker Jack Sanborn. A Lake Zurich native and former Wisconsin standout, Sanborn returns to Chicago after a brief stint with the Dallas Cowboys in 2025. Before his time in Dallas, Sanborn was a fixture in the Bears' lineup from 2022 to 2024, appearing in 52 career games and amassing 183 tackles and 15 tackles for loss. His veteran presence and familiarity with the organization provide much-needed stability as the team deals with the absence of linebacker D’Marco Jackson, who missed recent practices due to injury.
Injury Concerns and Depth
Beyond the secondary, the Bears are monitoring the status of rookie running back Kyle Monangai, who has been ruled week-to-week with a knee injury. With Monangai’s availability for Week 1 in doubt, the backfield depth will be tested early. Additionally, defensive lineman James Lynch has been re-signed to the active roster. Lynch, who spent the last two seasons with the Tennessee Titans, brings 98 career tackles and 3.5 sacks to a defensive front that must compensate for the loss of Gervon Dexter Sr., who was recently traded to the Atlanta Falcons.
Looking Ahead
As the Bears prepare for their Week 1 matchup, the focus remains on how Ben Johnson will adjust his game plan to account for the missing pieces. Johnson has emphasized the importance of Expected Points Added (EPA) in the passing game, noting that the team with the higher passing EPA wins over 80% of the time. With Caleb Williams leading the offense and a reshuffled defense looking to fill the void left by Bryant, the Bears' depth will be under the microscope immediately at Soldier Field. The team is scheduled for padded practices this week to finalize their situational football strategies before the Panthers arrive.
