The Chicago Bears' defensive backfield has officially entered crisis mode following a string of devastating injuries during training camp. Head coach Ben Johnson announced that prized free-agent acquisition Coby Bryant underwent knee surgery and is expected to miss four to six months. Bryant, who signed a three-year, $40 million deal this offseason, suffered a hyperextended knee and bone bruise that was initially thought to be manageable without surgery, but the updated prognosis leaves a massive void at the back end of the defense.
The Injury Toll

The situation worsened when backup safety Cam Lewis was carted off the field on August 8 with a right ankle injury. With Lewis's status uncertain and other key contributors like Kyler Gordon (calf) and Elijah Hicks (shin) starting camp on the physically unable to perform list, defensive coordinator Dennis Allen is facing a depth chart nightmare. The team has already moved Dallis Flowers to injured reserve and signed veteran Xavier Woods to help stabilize a unit that finished 29th in yards allowed per play last season.
Player Spotlight: Dillon Thieneman
All eyes now turn to rookie Dillon Thieneman, the 25th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The 6'0", 201-pound safety out of Oregon was expected to be a cornerstone of the future, but the future has arrived early. Thieneman, known for his versatility as a hybrid safety, is now being fast-tracked into a Week 1 starting role. His ability to adapt quickly to Allen’s scheme will be the deciding factor in whether the Bears can maintain their league-leading turnover production from a year ago.
Looking Ahead
The Bears open their season on September 13 against the Carolina Panthers, leaving very little time for the rookie to get acclimated to the speed of the professional game. While the team remains hopeful that Bryant could return for a potential postseason run, the immediate responsibility falls on Thieneman and the newly acquired Woods. For a fan base expecting a step forward after last year's defensive struggles, the health of the secondary remains the biggest question mark heading into the preseason opener against the Browns.
