Game Recap

Chicago White Sox defeated Chicago Cubs 3-0 at Wrigley Field on Wednesday afternoon, salvaging the series finale with a dominant two-hit shutout. Behind a masterful long-relief performance from José Urquidy and timely hitting from rookie Braden Montgomery, the South Siders snapped an eight-game losing streak at the historic North Side venue. The victory allowed the White Sox to split the annual season series 3-3, ending a frustrating stretch of walk-off losses earlier in the week.

The contest began as a tactical pitcher's duel, with White Sox opener Sean Newcomb setting the tone early by navigating two hitless innings. Cubs starter Clay Holmes matched the intensity, holding the White Sox scoreless through the first five frames with a sharp sinker-heavy approach. The scoreless deadlock finally broke in the top of the sixth inning when Miguel Vargas led off with a ground-rule double. Andrew Benintendi capitalized on the opportunity, driving a single to center field to bring Vargas home and give the White Sox a 1-0 lead.

The Cubs threatened to respond in the bottom of the sixth when Tyrone Taylor doubled for the team's first hit of the game. However, rookie right fielder Braden Montgomery made the defensive play of the game, fielding a fly ball by Pete Crow-Armstrong and firing an accurate throw to third base to cut down Taylor trying to advance. In the seventh, left fielder Sam Antonacci preserved the slim margin with a leaping catch against the ivy to rob Alex Bregman of a potential extra-base hit.

The White Sox provided their pitching staff with much-needed insurance in the eighth inning against Cubs reliever Ryan Rolison. After Miguel Vargas drew a walk and pinch-hitter Randal Grichuk doubled, Montgomery stepped to the plate and delivered a clutch two-run double that glanced off the glove of first baseman Michael Busch and into right field. The hit extended the lead to 3-0, effectively silencing the home crowd and putting the game out of reach for the struggling Cubs offense.

Key Performances

José Urquidy was the undisputed star of the afternoon, entering in the third inning and tossing six scoreless frames of relief. Urquidy allowed only two hits while striking out eight batters and walking none to earn his second win of the season. His dominance was complemented by Grant Taylor, who pitched a clean ninth inning with two strikeouts to secure his seventh save and complete the two-hit shutout.

On the other side, Clay Holmes took a tough loss despite a solid outing, surrendering just one run on six hits across 5.1 innings of work. The Cubs' offense was almost non-existent throughout the day, as Tyrone Taylor accounted for both of the team's hits. The North Siders struggled to capitalize on their few baserunners, finishing the game without a run and failing to solve the White Sox's effective bulk-relief strategy.

What's Next

The White Sox will return to Guaranteed Rate Field for a makeup game against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, featuring left-hander Anthony Kay (9-5, 4.01 ERA) against Grant Holmes (7-5, 3.82 ERA). Meanwhile, the Cubs will travel to face the Seattle Mariners on Friday night as they look to recover from the shutout and begin a new series on the West Coast.
