Veteran Leadership in the Linebacker Room
The Miami Dolphins have strengthened their linebacker unit by selecting two off-ball linebackers in the 2026 NFL Draft. Veterans Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson are embracing the competition these new additions bring, fostering a culture of growth and excellence within the team.
Draft Selections Enhance Linebacker Depth
In April, the Dolphins selected Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez with the 43rd overall pick. Rodriguez, a standout in college football, earned multiple prestigious awards during the 2025 season, including the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Butkus Award. His versatility and leadership qualities are expected to make an immediate impact on the Dolphins' defense. Additionally, the team added Pittsburgh linebacker Kyle Louis in the fourth round, recognizing his athleticism and potential to contribute in various defensive roles.
Jordyn Brooks' Leadership and Performance
Jordyn Brooks, entering his second season with the Dolphins, has emerged as a key leader in the linebacker room. His commitment to setting a high standard for the defense is evident, as he consistently leads by example and encourages his teammates to elevate their performance. Brooks' leadership is instrumental in integrating the new draft picks into the team's defensive schemes.
Tyrel Dodson's Role and Contract Status
Tyrel Dodson, who joined the Dolphins in 2024, continues to be a valuable asset to the team. In the 2025 season, Dodson recorded 129 total tackles, 5 sacks, and 1 interception, showcasing his versatility and playmaking ability. His current contract, which runs through the 2026 season, reflects the team's confidence in his contributions to the defense.
Fostering Healthy Competition
The addition of Rodriguez and Louis has introduced healthy competition within the linebacker unit. Both Brooks and Dodson are committed to mentoring the newcomers, sharing their experiences, and ensuring a smooth transition. This collaborative environment is expected to enhance the overall performance of the Dolphins' defense in the upcoming season.
