A New Strategic Direction

In a significant move to bolster its financial footprint, NFL team owners have officially approved a joint venture between the league's in-house investment platform, 32 Equity, and the global growth investor General Atlantic. The decision, ratified during the league’s October meeting in New York, marks a pivotal shift in how the NFL intends to scale its business interests and pursue new opportunities across the global sports ecosystem.

Expanding the Investment Horizon

32 Equity, which was originally launched in 2013 with a $1 million seed investment from each of the 32 NFL teams, has grown to approximately $250 million in capital. Throughout its history, the platform has successfully backed 46 companies, including prominent names such as Fanatics, On Location, and Clear. By partnering with General Atlantic, the league aims to leverage the firm's 45 years of investment experience to target growth in sectors including sports media, consumer products, ticketing, hospitality, and advanced technology.

Strategic Goals and Governance

The partnership comes nearly a year after NFL chief financial officer Christine Dorfler signaled the league's intent to explore new structures for scaling 32 Equity. While the specific financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the collaboration is designed to enhance fan engagement and broaden the league's reach in international markets. PJT Partners served as the advisor for 32 Equity during the formation of this venture.

The Broader Private Equity Landscape

This development follows a broader trend of the NFL embracing institutional capital. Since August 2024, the league has permitted private equity firms to purchase up to 10% of individual franchises. Recent activity has seen firms like Arctos Partners acquire stakes in teams such as the Cleveland Browns, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Los Angeles Chargers. While some owners, such as Arthur Blank, have expressed that the current roster of approved firms is sufficient for team-level investments, this new league-wide partnership with General Atlantic underscores the NFL's commitment to aggressive, long-term business expansion.
