The Las Vegas Raiders have officially reached a resolution in their training camp quarterback derby. Head coach Klint Kubiak confirmed that 15th-year veteran Kirk Cousins will start under center for the team's regular-season opener against the Miami Dolphins, relegating rookie No. 1 overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza to a backup role to begin the 2026 campaign.

Cousins entered training camp competing alongside Mendoza and third-year quarterback Aidan O'Connell. The 38-year-old signal-caller demonstrated sharp efficiency throughout exhibition play, completing 76.5 percent of his passes across two preseason outings for 101 yards and a touchdown. 'He played really good football,' Kubiak told reporters after practice. 'I'm really happy with all three of our quarterbacks. Kirk's had a really good offseason, very good camp and he's earned it.'

Patience with the Franchise Cornerstone

Holding the top overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft after winning the Heisman Trophy at Indiana, Mendoza arrives in Las Vegas as the presumptive franchise centerpiece. However, Kubiak and general manager John Spytek have prioritized development over immediate exposure, favoring a transitional bridge strategy. By allowing Mendoza to absorb the playbook from the sideline, the Raiders hope to replicate the traditional development track where highly drafted passers study under proven leaders before taking control.

Looking Ahead

With 167 career NFL starts, 44,700 passing yards, and 298 touchdown passes on his resume, Cousins brings stability and experience to an offense striving to compete in a demanding AFC West. While Mendoza's time will eventually come, all eyes in Las Vegas will be on Cousins as he attempts to convert preseason efficiency into regular-season victories starting in Week 1.
