Game Recap

Chicago Cubs defeated St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on a competitive afternoon at Busch Stadium. The Cubs utilized a strong pitching performance from Javier Assad, who lasted 4.1 innings and surrendered only one earned run while striking out six batters. The bullpen tandem of Ryan Rolison, Jacob Webb, and Aaron Civale combined to navigate the remaining innings effectively, sealing the win for Chicago.

The offensive production for Chicago was steady throughout the matchup. Alex Bregman was a standout performer, finishing the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Michael Busch contributed a 2-for-5 effort with an RBI, while Ian Happ added an RBI of his own despite going 1-for-5. The Cubs manufactured runs across the evening to overcome the Cardinals, who struggled to string together enough hits to match the Chicago offense.

For the Cardinals, JJ Wetherholt provided a bright spot by going 2-for-5 and launching a solo home run, which was the only round-tripper allowed by the Chicago pitching staff. Despite Wetherholt's effort and a 2-for-4 performance from Bryan Torres, St. Louis was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities against the Cubs' relief corps. Cardinals starter Andre Pallante took the loss, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits.

Key Performances

Chicago's offense was headlined by Nico Hoerner, who recorded an impressive 3-for-5 day at the plate. Pete Crow-Armstrong also maintained his consistency, going 2-for-5 to keep the pressure on the St. Louis defense. Seiya Suzuki reached base multiple times, drawing two walks while going 0-for-3 with a run scored.

On the pitching side for the Cubs, Javier Assad led the way with a 3.75 ERA performance, throwing 83 pitches over his 4.1 innings of work. Caleb Thielbar allowed a home run in his single inning of relief, but the rest of the bullpen held firm. St. Louis saw late-inning relief work from Luis Gastelum, who was tagged for two runs, one earned, over his single inning of work, ultimately shifting the momentum in favor of the visitors.
